Celebrations are raging in the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf camp as unofficial results from the by-election in 20 Punjab constituencies show that PTI, under the leadership of former prime minister Imran Khan, won the by-elections by the vote of the people. The preliminary results show that the PTI, which was led by the former PM, won 15 seats while the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz could only claim four. Unified candidates also won the victory.

The polling started at 8 am and ended at 5 pm. However, in some districts, polling was stopped because of clashes. On May 23, the Election Commission of Pakistan(ECP) “deserted” 25 PTI dissident lawmakers who voted against Hamza Shahbaz, the Punjab chief minister. Five lawmakers were elected to reserve seats for women or minorities.

According to the directive of the Lahore High Court, the PTI is in a strong position for winning the recount of votes for the Punjab chief Minister Election on July 22, in accordance with its directive. This will allow the PTI to defeat Hamza Shahbaz from the PML-N.

There were 3140 polling stations across 20 constituencies, with 700 male, 731 female, and 1700 combined stations. For the by-polls, a total of 9,562 booths were set up.

On Sunday night, the PTI camp was full of celebrations as early results from the 20-seat by-election in Punjab suggested that the PTI had defeated the PML-N in their race to retake Punjab.

Even though they lost, the PMLN displayed grace. Vice president Maryam Naz exhorted the party to “bend before people’s decision” in accepting the results “wholly.”

The ECP had designated 1204 polling stations as sensitive and 696 high-sensitive. Also, sensitive polling stations in Multan and Lahore were declared. Saeed Gul, Provincial Election Commissioner, had stated that the Election Commission was neutral and denied any allegations. They were following the Constitution and law.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI candidate Saifuddin Khosa won a victory with 56,857 votes, while Abdul Qadir Khosa, his opponent, was elected as the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz candidate (PML-N). He has 33,254 votes.
